Streamlining API Testing Automation for Mattress Firm’s Tech Expansion

Industry | Retail

Technology | Test Automation

Location | United States

Mattress Firm, a leading retail company specializing in sleep products, was becoming strained under the increasing complexity of their API integrations. Reliance on MuleSoft to connect disparate systems led to slowing their development. Additionally, the lengthy testing cycles were hindering progress.

Each API modification required almost two weeks of manual validation to ensure expected behavior remained unchanged, delaying vital updates. Moreover, overburdened databases and restricted proxies resulted in errors and lag, especially impacting crucial customer processes. To remedy these challenges, Royal Cyber proposed Test Automation Framework (TEAF), prioritizing expedited testing and optimized performance.

The vision centered on reducing labor-intensive tasks, accelerating test runs, and establishing seamless coordination across digital platforms, outside partners, and information repositories. By automating workflows and repetitive validation, the team aimed to bolster reliability, minimize defects, and enhance the overall operational fluency of the integrated ecosystem.

    Challenges

API performance hindered by Mule runtime proxy limits (10 requests/second) and constraints within SQL Server databases.

Critical MuleSoft APIs experienced high response times, especially with integrations to external vendors.

Slow, manual testing processes that often took up to two weeks per API delayed deployments.

Inefficient resource utilization occurred with CPU usage at 50% but still encountered errors due to proxy and database bottlenecks.

    Key Outcomes
    Accelerated Testing Cycles

Automation sliced regression testing time from typically 3–5 hours per flow to just 10 minutes.

    Enhanced System Reliability

Over 100+ important defects were recognized and addressed before production, ensuring smooth deployment

    Solutions

Automated scripts were deployed for bulk data transfers, MuleSoft flows, and third-party integrations like SQL, BigQuery and ElasticSearch.

Our test automation consultants conducted performance testing for 30+ APIs and 3 UI scripts to recognize and resolve restrictions.

Transparent test case preparation was introduced with clear inputs, actions and expected outputs for uniformity.

Automated regression testing and reporting saved 4–5 hours per flow in manual effort and decreased human mistakes.
