ServiceNow AI Agent Studio

AI Agent Studio is a development tool within the ServiceNow Platform that lets you build and customize AI agents. Users can easily create specialized AI agents, set guardrails, and automate tasks using a conversational natural language interface.

Prerequisites

Before setting up an AI Agent, ensure you have the following:

  • Now Assist Pro+ or Enterprise+ license
  • Yokohama Patch 1 or Xanadu Patch S installed
  • AI Agent Store App installed
  • AI Search Enabled
  • Now Assist AI Agents Plugin installed
  • Agile Development 2.0 Plugin installed

Setup Process

Follow these steps to prepare your environment:

  1. Enable Now Assist Panel in the Admin Console
  2. Assign AI Agent Admin Role (sn_ai.admin)
  3. Build your first AI Agent using the AI Agent Studio

Part 1: Defining the Use Case

A successful AI Agent implementation requires a clear plan:

  • What is the purpose of the AI Agent? → Define the Use Case
  • How will the AI Agent function? → Identify the Individual Agents

Steps to Create an AI Agent Use Case

  1. Go to Now Assist AI Agents > Overview
  2. Scroll down to Use Cases and click New
  3. Enter the required information in the fields
  4. Click Save and Continue until you reach the Toggle Display Screen

This makes the ai agent available from the Now Assist Panel, so you can run this ai agent from anywhere on the platform if you have now assisted panel turned on.

Understanding Roles and Instructions

The AI Agent role is essential as it provides context for the agent’s function. It defines:

  • Who the agent represents
  • The audience it serves
  • How it should implement tasks

The instructions serve as a guide for how the AI Agent should perform its job.

Difference Between Use Case Instructions and Agent Instructions

  • Use Case Instructions: Define the overall business goal of a team of AI Agents. These instructions help multiple AI Agents collaborate towards a common objective.
  • Agent-Specific Instructions: Provide task-level guidance for individual AI fulfillers, detailing how they should execute their specific responsibilities. 

Adding tools

For the AI Agent to function effectively, it requires specific tools to be configured. Various tools are available to assist the AI Agent, which can be accessed from the dropdown menu in the top right corner of the agent.

Below are the tools used for this AI Agent. We need to configure them and create the necessary flows and subflows.

Part 2: Connecting the AI Agent to the Use Case

  1. Navigate back to the Use Cases list and select the use case you created.
  2. Scroll down to the Connect AI Agents section.
  3. Click Add AI Agent, choose the AI Agent you created, then click Save and Continue.
